Ryker slumped into his bed and lay there unmoving. He’d spent the last two hours killing as many soldiers as possible with Shirley and Robyn at his side.

Shirley’s aptitude was very good, and her talent was far above average. She was growing exponentially as a wizard.

She’d have done well in his family. Her abilities weren’t quite at his own level, but she also had a far-more-normal mana pool than he did. If not even slightly bigger than normal.

Technically… she doesn’t have my talent or ability, but her pool is much bigger. Much, much bigger.

Realistically, father would have chosen her over me.

Great.

In the end, Robyn had almost been as tiring as casting that many spells, though. She doted on him, gave him way too much attention, and generally spoiled him while they were in the field.

Much to the delight of Shirley, who seemed to encourage it constantly. Even going so far as to make outright suggestions to Robyn that the paladin happily obliged.

Closing his eyes, Ryker groaned into his pillow.

“That bad?”

When he lifted his head, he looked over and found Wynne standing there. She was dressed in a thin black nightie that seemed just barely able to cover her. It looked like it was a single movement away from ripping free from her shoulder.

“I like her,” Ryker said. “She’s a very nice girl. Talented. It wasn’t that being with her was bad. I’m just tired. My avatar has more mana than I’d ever think possible to dream of. But after that much casting, my brain is just done.”

“If it makes you feel better, Shirley passed out on her floor,” Wynne said, easing the covers back from the bed. “I had Arria get her taken care of.”

“Thank you, my queen. You’re ever my partner,” Ryker said, turning his face back into the bed. “This would be impossible without you. I’m glad I didn’t kill you and eat you when we met.”

Wynne laughed at that. Ryker felt her hands on his back, her fingers gently pushing at him as if to roll him over.

“I honestly thought you might kill me that day. Didn’t think you’d eat me though,” Wynne murmured.

Ryker complied with her hands and rolled over onto his back, moving more towards the center of the bed.

“I’ve eaten Fairies before. My father threw me into a dungeon that was empty except for things like rabbits and Fairies. He wanted me to toughen up. To kill and eat what I could,” Ryker said. “I think I was seven.”

“Well, I’m not any ordinary Fairy,” Wynne said, smiling down at him. She began to carefully slip the buttons back through their holes. “Then again, I’m not sure there’s ever been a Fairy that was fully the size of a human woman. I’m taller than some of them, in fact.”

“Yeah, you’re kinda amazing,” Ryker said, closing his eyes as Wynne worked. “Like I said, without you this wouldn’t be possible.”

“Thank you. I love you, too, Ryker,” Wynne said, pulling the sides of his tunic open. Then her hands came to his shoulder, and she started to help him slide it off.
